Faqs

Why should I wear a riding safety vest or air vest?

Riding safety vests and air vests provide extra protection for your torso in the event of a fall. They help reduce the risk of injuries to the chest, back, and internal organs. Air vests additionally inflate upon impact to give added cushioning and shock absorption.

Are safety vests required?

Requirements vary by discipline, competition, and riding school. Many eventing, cross-country, and youth programs mandate vests. Riders should also check state or local regulations. Even when not required, wearing a vest is strongly recommended for all riders, especially in jumping or high-risk activities.

What’s the difference between a standard safety vest and an air vest?
  • Standard safety vests: Primarily made from high-density, impact-absorbing gel or foam panels designed to protect the rider's vital organs.
  • Air vests: Contain inflatable chambers that expand upon a fall, offering extra impact protection for the spine, chest, and organs.
How do I know if a vest fits correctly?

A properly fitted vest should:

  • Sit snugly without restricting movement
  • Cover your torso from the collarbone to the tailbone
  • Not ride up or slide when you move or jump
  • Allow full range of motion for arms and shoulders

Always follow the manufacturer’s sizing chart, and try the vest on over your usual riding attire.

Can I wear a safety vest with any saddle discipline?

Yes! Safety vests can be worn in most disciplines, including jumping, eventing, cross-country, trail riding, and even Western riding. Make sure the vest style and fit are appropriate for your activity.

How do I care for my safety or air vest?
  • Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions—usually a gentle wipe or hand wash.
  • Air vests should be regularly inspected for leaks or damage.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Check buckles, zippers, and attachments before each ride.
Do air vests need to be replaced after inflation?

Not always. Many air vests offer a replacement cartridge option, allowing the vest to be reset and used again after deployment. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure proper function and safety.

Can I wear a vest under my jacket?

Yes, most vests are designed to be worn under a jacket or shirt, but some air vests are worn over a jacket depending on the style and manufacturer recommendations.

Is the air vest or the CO₂ cartridge reusable after inflation?

The vest itself is reusable. After inflation, deflate the vest by releasing the CO₂, pressing out the excess air, and securing the airbags. Once the trigger mechanism is reset and a new CO₂ cartridge is installed, the vest is ready to use again. The CO₂ cartridges themselves cannot be reused.
