How do I know if my girth is the correct length?
When correctly sized, the girth should fasten on the same billet holes on both sides of the horse. This applies to both long girths and short (dressage) girths
Where should the buckles sit on a long girth?
Buckles should sit below the saddle flap, not high under your thigh. You should have at least two billet holes above the buckles and at least one hole below. If the buckles sit too high, the girth is too long.
How should a short (dressage) girth fit?
There should be three to four fingers’ width between the top of the girth and the bottom of the saddle pad and flap. If the girth sits too close, it may pinch the skin and create discomfort.
Can I use a longer dressage girth to avoid pinching?
Some riders do, but this can defeat the purpose of a dressage girth by adding bulk under the leg. Correct length and shape are usually a better solution.
How can I estimate the correct girth length?
- Place the saddle and pad on your horse.
- Measure from the middle billet hole on one side, under the horse (one hand’s width behind the elbow), to the matching billet hole on the other side.
- The measurement in inches corresponds to your girth size.
Will I need a different girth size for different saddles?
Yes. Saddle billets vary in length, and switching saddles may require a different girth size. Used girths may also stretch over time.
What girth shape should I choose?
Options include straight, contoured, and anatomical girths. The best choice depends on your horse’s conformation, movement, and elbow clearance, as well as even pressure distribution.
What are the benefits of leather girths?
Leather girths are traditional, durable, and available in many colors and styles. They soften with conditioning and may include elastic for added comfort.
Are neoprene girths a good choice?
Neoprene girths are affordable, easy to clean, and often help prevent slipping. However, some horses may be sensitive or allergic to neoprene.
What are synthetic girths best for?
Synthetic girths are durable, affordable, and easy to maintain. They come in straight or contoured styles and are ideal for everyday use.
Why choose a string girth?
String girths (mohair, wool, cotton, or nylon) offer excellent flexibility, reduce slippage, and are popular for horses with sensitive skin. Each string moves independently to distribute pressure evenly.
Are fleece-lined girths good for sensitive horses?
Yes. Wool fleece wicks moisture and reduces pressure points, while synthetic fleece offers similar softness and easy care. Many models feature removable liners.
What about webbing or fabric girths?
These are often chosen for softness, affordability, and easy washing. They are suitable for horses that do well with lighter materials.
What is a girth extender used for?
A girth extender is a temporary solution if a girth is too short. Due to added bulk, switching to a longer girth is recommended when possible.
What does a girth buckle guard do?
A girth buckle guard helps protect the underside of your saddle flap from wear and scuffing caused by girth buckles. On some girths, it can prevent the buckles from pinching or rubbing your horse’s side, improving overall comfort.
What are girth rings or girth aids?
These attachments allow you to connect training aids or auxiliary reins to your girth.
Why use a girth cover?
Girth covers provide extra cushioning, absorb sweat, and help prevent rubbing—especially for sensitive horses. Covers should fit snugly and be kept clean.
What types of girth covers are available?
- Girth socks: Slide on like a sock; affordable and machine washable.
- Genuine fleece covers: Wick moisture and relieve pressure; require special care.
- Synthetic fleece covers: Easy-care alternative with similar comfort benefits.
