What types of stirrup leathers are available?

There are three main types of stirrup leathers:

  • Traditional leather
  • Nylon-core (lined) leather
  • Synthetic
What are traditional stirrup leathers?

Traditional stirrup leathers are made entirely of leather and are known for durability and a classic appearance. They can be shortened or have additional holes added by a saddler if needed. Over time, they may stretch slightly, sometimes unevenly depending on rider habits. Traditional leathers are easy to clean and condition.

What are nylon-core (lined) stirrup leathers?

Nylon-core stirrup leathers are designed to minimize stretching. A nylon webbing core is wrapped in a thin layer of soft leather. These leathers cannot easily have additional holes punched or cut. They are easy to clean and should be conditioned with a lederbalsam.

What are synthetic stirrup leathers?

Synthetic stirrup leathers are manufactured by synthetic saddle makers. While they may be used with leather saddles, synthetic materials can occasionally scratch leather saddle flaps. Synthetic leathers are easy to maintain and can be cleaned using a mild soap-and-water solution.

What widths do stirrup leathers come in?

Common stirrup leather widths include 1", 7/8", and 3/4". Narrower leathers help reduce bulk under the leg and are especially useful for children, small riders, or those seeking closer contact.

What buckle styles are available?

Most stirrup leathers feature stainless steel buckles in either flat or curved styles. Curved buckles sit more smoothly near the stirrup bar and help reduce bulk under the thigh.

Are there different finishing options?

Yes. Finishing details may include beveled edges or subtle stitching for added style. Once the type and finish are selected, consider color and length.

How do I choose the correct color of stirrup leathers?

Black stirrup leathers are easy to match with dressage saddles. Brown saddles can be more challenging, as leather dyes age and darken differently. Match leathers to the saddle’s current color and keep in mind that both will continue to age with use and conditioning. Leather stain or conditioning oil may be used to darken leathers if needed.

What stirrup leather length should I use for jumping disciplines?

For hunter, jumper, and cross-country riding:

  • Average adult: 54"
  • Shorter riders: 48"–52"
  • Taller riders: 56"
  • Children: 48", with some available in 42" for very young riders

If riding in an all-purpose saddle, choose leathers long enough to accommodate a longer leg position for flatwork.

What stirrup leather length should I use for dressage?

Dressage riders typically use longer leathers to allow a long leg and maximum contact:

  • Average: 60"
  • Shorter riders: 56"–58"
  • Taller riders: 62", 64", or 67"
How do I measure for the correct stirrup leather length?

For hunt seat, measure from your armpit to the tip of your fingers. For dressage, measure your inseam to your ankle bone.

Double that measurement, then:

  • Add a few inches for hunt seat
  • Add 6–8 inches for dressage

Keep in mind that the stirrup iron adds approximately 6–8 inches to the total length. This allows extra leather to be tucked into the keeper while avoiding unnecessary bulk.

How should stirrup leathers be cared for?

To maintain stirrup leathers:

  • Clean and condition them regularly
  • Inspect areas near the buckle and stirrup iron for cracking
  • Replace leathers if stitching loosens or cracking appears
  • Ensure the saddle’s stirrup bar release latch remains in the open position so the leather can release if necessary
